Rupertisee & Theme Trail
The Rupertisee sits above
Wagrain at an elevation of 1,580
metres. If you hop aboard
the "Flying Mozart" gondola
lift, you will be able to enjoy
a scenic ride and reach the
summit station (elev. 1,869 m)
in a matter of minutes.
Right next to the summit station
is the start of the theme trail,
taking you across alpine
meadows, past springs and
mountain streams, all the way
down to the shores of the
Rupertisee, which you will reach
after about a half-hour walk.
The Rupertisee
itself provides a wonderfully
relaxing setting, with a path
around the lake, play and
recreational equipment for the
youngsters, and a variety of
refreshment opportunities along
the way. In addition to
the clearly posted theme trail,
you can also head out for a hike
along marked trails up to
the almost 2,000 metres-high
Griessenkareck. When you
are ready to return, we
recommend climbing back up to
the summit station, or walking
through the forest to the mid
station for the cable lift. In winter, the Rupertisee serves
as a reservoir for the region's
snowmaking equipment.
Farm Museum at the
Edelweissalm
This former farmhouse and barn
was once known as the Oberfaistallgut,
at which time it stood high
above Wagrainer Moardörfl at 1,300 m
above sea level. This typical
Pongau farm was constructed in
1750 and could only be reached
on foot. Some 30 years
ago, the owners left the farm
and moved to the valley. Both buildings were dilapidated,
until the owners of the
Edelweissalm procured them in
1994 and rebuilt them in a place
where a similar farm had also
once stood.
The upper storey of the house is
preserved in original condition,
clearly evidenced by the window
openings on the side, none of
which have any glass.
Daarmoossee – "Wagrainer Höhe Mitte" mountain lake
The "Wagrainer Höhe Mitte"
mountain lake is located by the
mid station of the "Roter
8er" lift at an elevation of
1,200 m, directly next to the
Edelweissalm. It may be readily
reached either on foot, or by
car and bus via the Weberlandl
access road. The lake was built
in 2002 by the Wagrain Lift Co.
as a supplemental reservoir to
the Rupertisee. The reservoirs
help ensure winter snowmaking
capabilities, also serving as
recreational areas for the
locals, guests and all their
visitors .
Mountain Bike Park Wagrain -
NEW since August 2006!!!
A red-letter day in 2006 for all
mountain bikers. At the
beginning of August, the first
of two trails next to the "Flying Mozart" lift is set to
open. The opening of the
second trail, which is going to
be a lot more challenging, will
follow just a few weeks later. The Flying Mozart gondola lift
carries bikers to the start of
both trails.
The "Sport Factory", a sporting
goods store in Wagrain, is the
park's official bike shop and is
located at the base station of
the "Flying Mozart". You
can rent out bikes there, of
course, as well as the
appropriate protective clothing.
History of the Town
We first find a historic record of Wagrain in 1234. The first written documentation of Wagrain as a market town dates from 1285. After the Goldegger line died out in 1400, the community came into the hands of the region's princes. As a consequence of the protestant persecutions of 1731/32, many of Wagrain's citizens were forced to leave their homes. For centuries, until the mid 19th century, the populace lived primarily from mining, from agriculture and cart traffic, as well as countless packers' caravans. As the world changed, the community became more and more poor. In 1927, a devastating fire destroyed a large number of buildings on the market square. After a period of privation, however, a slow but steady upwards trend was brought about by the burgeoning tourism industry.
Karl Heinrich Waggerl (author)
Karl Heinrich Waggerl was born in Bad Gastein on Dec.10, 1897. After returning from imprisonment in Italy, he marries Edith Pitter, "Dita", in 1920 and moves to Wagrain. He begins teaching at the Wagrain Elementary School, but has to give up his post in 1923 due to illness. In subsequent years, he earns his living as an insurance agent, sign painter, copywriter and clerk with the highway authorities. In 1929, he achieves his initial breakthrough with his first novel, "Brot". In the 20's and 30's, he is also intensively occupied with photography. 1940/41 he serves as mayor of Wagrain. In 1973, Waggerl dies from injuries sustained in an automobile accident and is buried in the cemetery in Wagrain. After his wife's death, his home is purchased by the market town of Wagrain and turned into a museum and events venue.
Joseph Mohr - librettist of "SILENT NIGHT! HOLY NIGHT!"
Born 11.12.1792 in Salzburg, he was ordained a priest at Salzburg Cathedral in 1815. He served as assistant priest in various parishes within the archdiocese, writing the libretto of the Christmas song known around the world, "Silent Night! Holy Night", in 1816. Teacher and organist, Franz Xaver Gruber, set his words to music. In 1837, he came as a parish priest in his own right to Wagrain. Beloved and venerated by the entire town, his first major work was the construction of the town's very first elementary school. Squarely focused on social issues, he also totally restructured mechanisms to assist the poor. A singer and musician with a mastery of several instruments, he ran a big church choir, fostered the German hymn tradition, and was also active as a composer. On 4.12.1848, Joseph Mohr passed away and was buried in the Wagrain cemetery.
